The Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering (CSEE) at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for two non-tenure track Professor of the Practice positions to begin in Spring or Fall 2018 (January or August). Appointees to these positions will have attained prominence in the computational sciences through practice and leadership in industry, government, or academia.

Professors of the Practice teach a wide range of courses, primarily at the undergraduate level, from introductory (Computer Science I & II) to senior-level special topics. In addition, they advise students, mentor student teaching assistants, and help shape departmental practices and policies; Professors of the Practice participate in many activities for their professional enhancement and to strengthen the undergraduate program, including developing new courses, researching innovative teaching methods, supervising masters-level graduate students, leading departmental assessment and accreditation efforts, and providing consulting services to organizations outside the University.

The CSEE department is large and growing, with a diverse community of approximately 1500 undergraduate majors in the Computer Science (CS) and Computer Engineering (CE) programs. Professors of the Practice, along with Lecturers and a cadre of tenure-track faculty, are the driving force behind the Department’s broad effort to ensure quality education for our undergraduates: working to improve computing education, curriculum, diversity, and student support. Our faculty are engaged in computing education research and implementation projects including team-based approaches to introductory Computer Science courses, support for students new to computing, transition pipelines for transfer students, approaches to support academic integrity, digital games to enhance learning about history, and high school computing curriculum and teacher development. CSEE faculty collaborate with the Center for Women in Technology to support Scholar Programs to increase the diversity of those who create technology, with programs designed for women in computing and engineering, transfer students from underrepresented groups, and diverse students interested in cybersecurity. In addition to our undergraduate programs, the Department has graduate programs in CS, CE, Electrical Engineering, and Cybersecurity, and strong and multi-disciplinary research programs. Our faculty enjoy collaboration within the department, across departments, and with partners outside the University.

UMBC’s campus is located on 500 acres just off I-95 between Baltimore and Washington DC, and less than 10 minutes from the BWI airport and Amtrak station. The campus includes the bwtech@UMBC research and technology park, which has special programs for startups focused on cybersecurity, clean energy, life sciences and training. We are surrounded by one of the greatest concentrations of commercial, cultural and scientific activity in the nation. Located at the head of the Chesapeake Bay, Baltimore has all the advantages of modern, urban living, including professional sports, major art galleries, theaters and a symphony orchestra. The city’s famous Inner Harbor is an exciting center for entertainment and commerce. The nation’s capital, Washington, DC, is a great tourist attraction with its historical monuments and museums. Just ten minutes from downtown Baltimore and 30 from the D.C. Beltway, UMBC offers easy access to the region’s attractions by car or public transportation.

Applicants with interest and experience in all areas of computer science will be considered. Candidates should demonstrate excellence in the practice as well as leadership in the computational sciences and must hold a terminal degree in computer science or a closely related field, or have equivalent stature by virtue of experience in industry, government, or academia. Ideal candidates will demonstrate strong teaching and organizational skills.
