Sherman To: CSEE ALL Subject: [Csee-faculty-lecturer] 2007-2008 CSEE Research Awards winners Congratulations to the following students for winning the 2007-8 CSEE best research awards. Each will receive $100 and present a 20mins talk at Friday's Research Review. I hope that some undergraduate will apply for next year's award. Kudos also to the other applicants-the selection committee reports that there were several strong applicants this year. Best research by a MS student John Kloetzli (Advisor: Marc Olano) Best research by a PhD student Russell Fink (Advisor: Alan Sherman) Awards Selection Committee Drs. Pinkston and Nicholas Dr. Alan T. Sherman Organizer, 2008 CSEE Research Review P.S. I did not participate in the selection of the awards this year, due to conflict of interest. Evaluation Criteria Prizes are awarded primarily on the basis of the scientific merit of the submitted manuscript. Scientific merit includes significance, originality, nontriviality, correctness. To a lesser extent, effective writing (clarity, proper English usage) may also be considered. In close cases, some preference may be given to students awarded degrees in 2007-2008. Eligibility Applicants must be CSEE majors (CS, EE, CE). A significant part of the research must have been carried out in 2007-2008. Group work is fine, but the applicant must have performed the primary portion of the work. In the case of group work, judges should consider what was the applicant's contribution. The work does not have to be related to the applicant's thesis, and the applicant does not have to receive a degree in the current year. The applicant must be registered for either the fall 2007 or spring 2008 term. To be considered, the applicant must formally apply for the award and submit a research manuscript or thesis written primarily by the student. The applicant's advisor must write a detailed letter of support. For each level, each faculty member may endorse at most one student at that level. Simply submitting an abstract for the poster session does not constitute applying for an award. A student may win the award multiple times, but only once for each research project. Judges Any tenured or tenure-track CSEE faculty member may serve on the selection committee. However, no faculty member may participate in the selection of an award for which one of his or her students is applying.
