Assignment 4

In class exercise - Due: Thur, 3/1 by 3:45 PM

Part 1 - Group Membership

During the last class period, I had you divide yourselves up into groups based on your interests.
Please indicate which group you joined.
  • Learning from a Blank Slate - 4 person group
  • Learning from a Blank Slate - 3 person group
  • Haptics-based surgical simulation - 4 person group
  • XPod - 3 person group
  • TraumaPod - 3 person group

Part 2 - XPod

Sandor has agreed to come back to speak to our class again next week. This time he will be presenting XPod. He has asked me to inform you that XPod, under a different name, tied for 1st place on the campus business plan competition.

If you haven't already read the group of articles on UMBC's main page entitled "UMBC Awarded $2 Million to Fund Entrepreneurship Education", please do so during classtime today. This series of small articles will probably be removed on Sunday as Entrepreneurship Week ends at that time.

Sandor is supposed to come up with a new name for XPod and has asked that you make some suggestions. Please read the XPod papers now and then give two suggestions for new names.

Part 3 - Learning from a Blank Slate

Marc Pickett has agreed to come to speak to us on Thursday next week about his research, "Learning from a Blank Slate".
He works with Dr. Tim Oates in the CORAL lab.

  • The paper entitled "The Cruncher: Automatic Concept Formulation Using Minimum Description Length"
is the current paper of the "Learning from a Blank Slate" project.
He suggests that you concentrate on the Introduction and Discussion sections of that paper.
