A good step by step instructions for installing Red Hat Linux 6.2 in UMBC network can be found at http://waste.ucs.umbc.edu/linux . AFS and Depot links may not be relevant to you but install and post install links give a very detailed instructions for successfully installing linux in your machine. Security and Networking links are relevant if you plan to connect the machine to internet.

A good website for linux beginners, which contains information regarding installation, shell commands etc can be found http://www.linux.ie/newusers/beginners-linux-guide/

Linux source code can be downloaded from http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel

A very good information regarding various aspects of linux can be got fromhttp://www.linuxdoc.org.

Link to the UMBC linux users group http://linux.umbc.edu/umbc-lug/index.html#TOC8 . You can subscribe to the mailing list here and post your queries. There is also information about the tutorials which the group conducts for the beginners.
