CMSC 291u - Introduction to UNIX - Spring 2003 - HW 1
Out: Monday January 27th       Due: Friday January 31st

Feel free to search the web (www.google.com, or whatever) but do not cut and paste. The goal of this assignment is to get you to log on and experiment and to play with Linux, Gnome and KDE.

  1. Describe some of the characteristics of a UNIX system.

  2. Other than what was listed in the class notes, what are some other differences between Linux & Microsoft Windows

  3. In your own words what is X windows?

  4. In your own words what is a desktop manager?

  5. In your own words what is a window manager?

  6. In your own words what is a shell?

  7. Is Gnome a window or a desktop manager?

  8. Is KDE a window or a desktop manager?

  9. Log onto Linux using both Gnome and KDE? List at least 2 notable differences between the two interfaces.

  10. The course notes mention that it is possible to interchange window managers and desktop managers. Log onto Linux using Gnome as the session type and change your window manager to something else. Tell me the steps that you took to do this. A good starting place for finding how to do this is the "Start Here" option on the main menu.

  11. KDE has built in lock screen and logout buttons right on the main tool bar. Gnome has a lock screen button but no logout button right on the tool bar. Tell me the steps of how to add a logout button right to the panel. A good starting place is to right click on the panel, then explore the menu options.

  12. I mentioned in class the multiple desktops. I also mentioned that many UNIX window managers implement a "Sticky" feature for windows. In KDE this is toggled on and off by clicking on the thumbtack on the top of a window. Cycle through the multiple desktops with both this thumbtack depressed and not depressed. You should notice a difference. Explain what happens when the thumbtack is depressed (meaning that the window is sticky).

Here is the thumbtack to look for...

I have been told that depending upon how your version of KDE is setup from within your account you may not see the thumbtack by default. To get it do the following steps.
    1. Go into KDE Control Center
    2. Under "Look & Feel" -> "Window Decoration" make sure that the window decoration is KDE followed by something.
