UMBC CMSC 104 -- Spring 2001

Homework 1

Part 1: Exercise 1.6 on page 25. This should be done on paper, not by email.

Part 2: Use emacs or pico to create a file called mybio.txt. You will be writing a brief autobiography about yourself as follows:

  1. Begin by listing your name, social security number, major, and class standing (e.g., sophomore).

  2. Then write a paragraph or two telling me a little bit about yourself. Tell me where you are from and why you chose UMBC for your education. Tell me which programming languages you know, if any. Also, tell me which operating systems you are familiar with, if any. I would also like to know why you are taking this course. Do not leave out any of this information!

  3. Use pine to send an email to the course instructor that has the mybio.txt file that you created as an attachment. Make sure to send a carbon copy (cc) to the course TA.
Note: You'll find that emacs is easier to use from the SGI machines in ECS 005. There is also a version of emacs called xemacs that is available on UNIX boxes running X-windows. xemacs is available on the machines in ECS 005.
