CMSC-203 Discrete Math Schedule (spring 2001--Section 0101, Alan Sherman)

This schedule is recommended by the course coordinator Dr. Alan T. Sherman as the common schedule for all sections of CMSC-203. Elements of this schedule include: (1) A strong emphasis on proofs, calculation, and counting. (2) Weekly written homework. (3) Two tests exams and a comprehensive final exam. (4) Specific topics as described in this schedule. In addition, Dr. Sherman recommends strongly that a significant amount of class time be devoted to active problem-solving by students in small groups.

Part I: Proofs (Chapters 1-5, plus additional material on program correctness)

Six weeks, including ten lectures and one test.

Part II: Calculation (Chapters 7,8,10+, plus additional material on solving difference equations)

Five weeks, including nine lectures and one test.

Part III: Counting (Chapter 6+, Sections 7.4 and 7.6 and 8.1, plus additional material on counting by inclusion/exclusion)

Four weeks, including eight lectures.
