From sherman@cs.umbc.eduTue Apr 18 14:29:01 1995 Date: Sun, 16 Apr 1995 20:18:53 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Sagalchik wins UMBC Open 4-wins, 0-losses, 1-draw, 1-bye 39 people played in the UMBC Open, held April 15-16, 1995 at UMBC. Sagalchik was the clear winner with 4 points against strong competetion, including1995 MD Open Chess Champion William Morrison (2512). Vinod and David Ford played very well, even though vinod ended up with only 2points. David tied for second in <1500 sections, winning $52.50. We broadcast Sagalchik's last game over the Internet Chess Club, thanks to Pred who typed in the moves based in part on my phone calls from the ballroom. Afterwards, Sagalchik lost three gamnes to wchess over internet, played at time control of 10 3 on the Fischer clock. Two interesting developments: -1- Brooklyn College challenged UMBC to an internet match (all dates and details to be arranged) -2- William Morrison (2512) would like to enter UMBC in fall 1995 to finish the chemistry degree he started at Morgan State. He needs funding to make this possible. No clear word if Sagalchik will come to UMBC in the fall. Results .... Open Section (13 people) 1. GM Sagalchik (2568) 4points $200 2-3.
