Professor of Practice, Computer Science, UMBC

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Computer Science and Electrical Engineering Department invites applications for a non-tenure track position in Computer Science at the rank of Professor of the Practice to begin in August 2012. All Computer Science areas will be considered. We are especially interested in candidates with teaching interest in security related areas. Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field or equivalent stature by virtue of experience. Ideal candidates will have a history of research, publication, professional outreach, university teaching, and relevant industry experience. Successful candidates will be expected to teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels and to help further develop departmental programs in Cyber Security.

The department. CSEE is UMBC’s largest department, with 34 tenure-track faculty, six teaching faculty and 16 research faculty. We currently have about 900 undergraduate students in two programs, Computer Science and Computer Engineering, and 225 graduate students in three core programs, Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering. The department also manages three graduate professional programs: Cyber Security, Systems Engineering and Engineering Management.

Our research. The CSEE department has a diverse research portfolio with over $6M of research expenditures per year from government and industrial sponsors and partners. Our location in the Baltimore-DC corridor puts us in the center of one of the largest concentrations of federal agencies and research and development centers as well as many industrial research labs. Our EE and CS Ph.D. programs were highly ranked by the 2010 NRC study for research productivity. The department has produced a total of 221 Ph.D.s in the past 25 years.

Our CS program. In additional to our ABET accredited undergraduate Computer Science and Computer Engineering programs, we have special concentrations in security and information assurance and game development. We are a designated Center of Academic Excellence in both Information Assurance Education and Research by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. The UMBC Center for Women In Technology (CWIT) is dedicated to increasing the representation of women in creating technology and in engineering and information technology fields and helps to attract and retain women majors in our programs. Our well-known Meyerhoff Scholars Program produces a large number of graduate students from under-represented minorities.

The University. UMBC is a selective, medium-sized public research university ranked by the Carnegie Foundation in the category of Research Universities with high research activity. U.S. News & World Report ranked UMBC number one among “Up and Coming” national universities, “schools everyone should be watching”, for a third year in a row in 2011. UMBC’s convenient, suburban campus is located just minutes off I-95 between Baltimore and Washington DC, and less than 10 minutes from the BWI Airport.
