JOURNAL OF INTELLIGENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS:
INTEGRATING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND DATABASE TECHNOLOGIES

Special Issue on
**NETWORKED INFORMATION DISCOVERY AND RETRIEVAL**

The recent explosive growth of information on the Internet, fueled
largely by the popularity of the World Wide Web and Mosaic, has opened
up new possibilities and requirements for networked access to
information. While the Web and Mosaic provide a uniform transport
mechanism and interface to a large body of data on the Internet, their
use also introduces a new set of research issues concerning the
efficient discovery, storage and retrieval of of this networked
information. Traditional database techniques of storage, indexing,
querying, transaction management, etc., are not sufficient given the
diverse nature and autonomous administration of much of the
information becoming available on the Internet. In view of the
rapidly growing use and importance of networked information, a special
issue of the Journal of Intelligent Information Systems, planned for
fall 1995, will be devoted to topics related to networked information
discovery and retrieval. Papers are solicited in, but not limited to,
the following areas:

* Algorithms and approaches for navigation in a networked information
retrieval environment (browsing, querying, information filtering,
interface issues, retrieval approaches, intelligent agents);

* Information organization and indexing techniques to aid information
discovery and retrieval, including performance studies, data model
issues, compression, clustering, caching, replication, and migration;

* Security for networked information environments;

* Other issues for database systems and database applications
operating in an open networked environment, including information
filtering and censorship, intelligent mediation between networked
information sources, etc.;

* Descriptions of prototype systems for networked information discovery
and/or retrieval.

The mission of the JOURNAL OF INTELLIGENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS: Integrating
Artificial Intelligence and Database Technologies is to present research
and development focused on the integration of Artificial Intelligence and
Database Management technologies to provide models, architectures, tools
and techniques for the next generation of systems -- Intelligent
Information Systems. The journal focuses on the creation of information
systems that exhibit intelligent behavior and embody intelligence in
their reasoning and management processes. The journal is an archival,
peer-reviewed, technical journal publishing high-quality, state-of-the-
art papers.

**Instructions for Submitting Papers**

Manuscripts should be no more than 30 printed pages (approximately
15,000 words) with a 12-point font and 18-point spacing, including

consideration by, other journals. Include a separate page specifying
the title and giving the preferred address of the contact author for
correspondence (including postal address, telephone number, fax number,
and e-mail address). Send FOUR copies of each submission to the guest
editor listed below. For additional information, contact the guest
editor.
