Reading List for CMSC 811 (Fall 1995)

The date before each paper list is the date on which it was assigned.

6 Sep 1995

This paper provides a general overview of parallel I/O and the directions that current research is exploring. It serves as a good introduction to the field.

11 Sep 1995

The three papers for this week describe scientific applications that place high demands on computers, including their I/O systems. They provide good background material on the problems for which high-performance computing systems and high speed, large capacity I/O systems are necessary.

18 Sep 1995

20 Sep 1995

Due: Please hand in a one page description of your proposed project along with the name(s) of the people working on the project.

25 Sep 1995: Class will not meet (Rosh Hashanah)

27 Sep 1995

2 Oct 1995

4 Oct 1995: Class will not meet (Yom Kippur)

9 Oct 1995

The paper assigned today discusses the Vesta file system designed at IBM.

11 Oct 1995

Another paper on Vesta.

16 Oct 1995

For the next few weeks, we'll be reading and discussing several efforts to build parallel file systems. These will be in somewhat reverse chronological order; this will allow us to spend more time on the recent research in the area while still covering the history of the field (those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it...).

18 Oct 1995

Due: A design plan for your project, and a progress report detailing what you've already done. This need not be a long report; a page or two is sufficient. The checkpoint is to insure that you're making progress on the project.
