MemBIST applet tool for RAM testing The developed MemBIST applet presents a software tool that demonstrates principles of RAM testing and of a memory BIST structure. It consists of two separate modules: In the part called Learning, a user learns the basics about a RAM and a BIST structure while going successively through all components of the memory array and the BIST architecture. A short description of the component, which is highlighted on a small picture of the BIST structure, appears in the description part of the window under the picture. The purpose and functionality of single BIST structure blocks is demonstrated by an interactive animation where block inputs can be modified and then changes at outputs observed. The part Exercise is aimed to demonstrate and exercise RAM memory faults and testing algorithms. The tool illustrates basic fault model types and their manifestation. March test algorithms, because of high fault detection and low number of operations, are implemented into the proposed BIST structure to illustrate testing performance by fault detection and localisation of an injected individual fault. An automatic March Test generator is also implemented in the applet. The user can define a tested memory and inject faults of selected types into the given matrix. Then after setting the parameters for the address generator, the steps of memory testing and injected fault detection are simulated and visualised. The MemBIST applet is useful as an educational tool and a training tool in built-in self-testing for RAM memories.
