interMedia is the Oracle8i component that enables
multimedia content to benefit from advanced database services.
It enables Oracle8i to manage text, documents, image, audio and
video in an integrated fashion with other traditional database
information. Oracle8i interMedia's architecture, tools and services
are designed to seamlessly support Internet and e-commerce applications.
The features include: full and thematic text search and index
capabilities, standard SQL access to text, documents, images,
audio and video data, native support for image, audio, video data
types, formats, and compression schemes, data attribute management,
support for web authoring applications, flexible storage support
and content-based retrieval of images.
This talk will describe the technologies behind
this product, with special focus on content-based retrieval of
images. A novel technique of modeling an high dimensionalindex
using several bitmap indexes has been used to build an efficient
image index. The talk will also compare and contrast industrial
and academic perspectives of multimedia database technology.
